Scoil Chaitríona Junior in Renmore, in Galway city, is a large co-educational  public Catholic school in an urban setting.  About 400 students attend our school, and as it is a junior school, most, if not all of our students, range in age from 4-9years old.  At our school we are hugely enthusiastic about learning and with the help of our local (and very inspiring) Galway Education centre, we are constantly involved in new and interesting projects.

This year we are most enthusiastic about:

  • being chosen to represent Galway in the Keep on Track project
  • being one of the first schools in Ireland (or the UK) to be involved in the WeDo Robotics Junior First Lego League challenge

Here are some of the other interesting facts about our school:

  •  we have won a Discover Primary Science Award each year since its beginning in 2005
  • we have interactive whiteboards in each class
  • each pupil in the 1st and 2nd classes has access to an individual laptop
  • we use visualisers, digital cameras and video cameras to help us in our daily learning
  • We have won a Scoil Net star site for our school’s website
  • We set up school gardens with the help of the Medtronic Foundation and the Galway City Council

On an annual basis we are involved in a number of ongoing projects:

  • we run Maths Week events
  • we run Science Week events
  • we are involved in the Galway Science and Technology festival
  • we participate in the Greenwave project
  • we have won two Green School flags
  • we participate in the Write-A-Book project
  • we work with the Junior Achievement programme
  • we appear on stage in the Féile Drámaíochta Drama festival each year
  • we enter the Junior Spider internet awards

We are thrilled to be involved in this “Keep on Track” project and are learning so much about trains.  The enthusiasm with which we are taking part is an experience that will stay with us for a long long time to come!
